The Numerous Benefits of Figs

The fig is a fruit of the ficus or fig tree, a tree that is native to the tropics, although some species grow in eastern Europe and the Middle East.

Fig trees are mostly evergreen trees that reach heights of up to 15 meters. The fruit of the fig tree ranges from pale green to black in color when ripe. Even the rind of this edible fruit can be eaten.

There are many types of figs but the type that is commercially cultivated is the common fig. This type can grow without needing fertilization. Some other types are mission figs, Calimyrna figs, San Pedro figs and Turkish figs.

Figs can be eaten raw and fresh from the tree. They can also be refrigerated for a few days. They can be dried and frozen, which is what many fig snack manufacturers do. Both dried and fresh figs can be extremely beneficial for health. Drink plenty of water when eating fresh figs to prevent stomach or intestinal pain.

Apart from being an important social and religious symbol in many historic cultures, figs offer many health benefits. That is why more and more people are adding figs to their diet.

Benefits of Figs

  • Figs are high in dietary fiber and can help promote healthy bowel function and digestive system health.

  • They contain plenty of potassium, which is important for regulating blood pressure and strengthening the walls of blood vessels.

  • Figs are high in natural sugars. Hence, they can provide you with plenty of energy. Instead of drinking coffee for that short burst of energy, try dried figs instead. These offer an energy boost and are healthy snacks. Eat them with nuts and a dash of honey for added flavor.

  • Figs also contain a lot of calcium, which helps strengthen bones and prevent bone diseases. Stuff figs with goat's cheese and almonds to get the most calcium out of them.
